Avanade & JA Europe increase efforts to inspire more girls to pursue STEM careers

08 March 2018

JA Europe and Avanade, are joining efforts for a second academic year to empower, upskill and educate young women about technology, enabling them to make a considered decision on choosing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

In the first year of the partnership, 102 Avanade volunteers supported 1,124 girls across Brazil, Italy, Norway, Spain and Sweden. Avanade Corporate Citizenship Annual Report is highlighting the progress that's been made: “This is an exciting start to our ongoing partnership with JA Europe and it is very positive to see our reach exceeding the targets we initially set”. This year, more countries have been added: China, Denmark, UK, USA (Atlanta & Chicago).
The goal for this school year is to reach another 1000 girls!

Why focus on girls?

Avanade STEMAvanade’s ebook "Think about Stem" shines a light on the underrepresentation of women in STEM careers, stating 13% of the UK STEM workforce are women which amounts to a mere 1 in 8 STEM jobs. Statistics such as these motivate the initiative. JA Europe is proudly highlighted in this booklet as a partner helping make a positive change.

“Avanade volunteers offer a unique insight into a career path that young women may not have otherwise considered. Last year’s results were astounding, with young women growing inspired about a career in User Experience and User Interface Design, for instance,” said Caroline Jenner, CEO of JA Europe.

Last year, Mirna Rodriguez, a volunteer from Avanade Spain shared her day with young women and recounted, “The new female generation should perceive themselves as capable to grow in the technology area, and not only that, to be part of the positive change that is happening globally, a world with equity.”

There is more work to be done and the partnership between JA Europe and Avanade will continue to do just that. Avanade volunteers will conduct classroom visits, invite young women to their place of work, tell their stories through interview and vlogs, with the goal to continue to inspire and breakdown any pre-existing stereotypes.

Another exciting aspect of this collaboration is the appointment of Adam Warby, CEO of Avanade, onto the JA Europe Board of Directors: “Our global Corporate Citizenship approach focuses on closing the gender, technology and income gaps for women to better enable them to realize their full potential (…) In 2017, I became a member of the Junior Achievement Europe Board of Directors, helping to further Avanade’s support of this vital partnership that is equipping girls with the professional skills essential for their lives “
